At the end of the LO are some student self reflection questions that Prof. Chan often incorporates into assignments to direct students to their strengths and weaknesses and to build a roadmap for further improvement on a topic.

Learning Goals

Students should be able to:

• Explain the t4 parameter and how it is used in coordination chemistry

• Rationalize observations in experimental data (IR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, magnetic measurements, cyclic voltammetry)

• Define redox non-innocence and show its prevalence in applications in chemistry

• Use CBC methods to determine the EN, LBN, VN, and dn

• Apply concepts of green chemistry principles to article

Implementation Notes

I have not used this LO yet but probably would do so in an inorganic chemistry course or with my research students. The activity would involve reading the paper outside of class and answering the guiding questions in groups during class time and then discussion of the results.

Evaluation Methods

Generally what I do with literature assignments is to assign the article and questions for the students to answer before class time. The students would be required to complete about 50-60 percent of the questions and submit initial work for completion. Then I would have to class break up into groups fix answers to the questions they answered and complete the questions not yet answered. I would then save about 15 minutes of the class period (our classes are 1 hr 20 minutes) to have a student centered activity where students share answers to the questions with the class.Then the students could take the problems home for homework and then submit final responses. I would grade student completion (first) and then accuracy. I would also give a set of points for group participation and providing answers to the class during the group discussion.
