Description

This literature discussion LO was created for the ACS National Award Winners 2024 collection. Dr. Holger Braunschweig was the recipient of the 2024 M. Frederick Hawthorne Award in Main Group Inorganic Chemistry. This LO is based on a figure from the article "Transition metal borylene complexes" published in Chem. Soc. Rev., 2013, 42, 3197. DOI: 10.1039/c3cs35510a.

guiding questions for students 23.04 KB
Learning Goals

After answering the guiding questions about Figure 1, students will be able to....

1) Define "hypovalent" in the context of boron compounds.

2) Draw Lewis structures for an isoelectronic series: N2, CO, BF

3) Define HOMO and LUMO in the context of molecular orbital theory.

4) Interpret the relationship between ability of a ligand to act as a sigma donor to a metal and the energy of its HOMO.

Implementation Notes

This LO has not been used yet, but we recommend assigning these problems for the students before class, so that they come prepared to discuss the paper in class.

Time Required
variable, depends upon implementation. If students read the article and look at the questions before class, the discussion/group work could fit into a 45-60 minute class period.
Evaluation
Evaluation Methods

One possible method of evaluation is to collect student answers to the guiding questions before the discussion takes place in class and/or collect student answers after the class discussion and/or collect answers written by small groups during the discussion.
