My Notes
Description

In this assignment students search for and choose an inorganic chemistry related research article. After reading, students write an analysis of their article, explaining the background, experimental data, and conclusions to their classmates.

Learning Goals

In this assignment student will:

  • Search the chemical literature and find a recent inorganic chemistry related research article
  • Read and understand their chosen article
  • Analyse the article, discussing the experimental data and conclusions and relating them to topics covered in the course
Implementation Notes

I use this assignment in my foundations course, as a sort of capstone to the more focused lit discussion LOs we do in the first half of the semester. Adding the rough draft and peer review components of the assignment has improved the overall quality of the final submissions. I don't include any specific page limits, but most end up in the 3-5 page range, especially if they include figures.

For the peer review component I rename all the submitted word docs paper 1, 2, 3... and randomly assign each student two to peer review, keeping it at least somewhat anonymous.

Evaluation
Evaluation Methods

This is graded in two parts using the rubrics above. The first part covers choosing a paper, turing in a first draft and completing two peer reviews. The second part grades the final draft on content, writing style, etc.

Evaluation Results

Most students do really well on this assignment. In Fall 2021 17/21 students got an A or A-. It's a nice little grade boost for students who aren't the best test takers.
