What happens when chemical compounds are added to water?

Description

It’s very surprising how little students remember from general chemistry.  This assignment helps students make connections between the macroscopic properties of solutions and what happens at the molecular level.  This activity serves as a bridge between sections on acid-base chemistry and coordination chemistry.

Students are solicited for their models of the behavior of different chemical compounds in water in class and asked to put these models on the board.  We then look at the properties of these solutions (color, acid-base) and refine these models in class.

Symmetry Scavenger Hunt

Students are sent to find (and take pictures) of  items in various point groups around campus.  Generally, I give them a list of possible offices (though they are free to go to other places) and point groups (some hard) and the following ground rules:

 

Athletic Periodic Trends Review

Description

­In this activity, students self-organize according to periodic trends. I print out the attached cards onto card stock (each page will contain two) and hand them out to the students (one to each). Generally, we go outside and I shout out periodic trends (i.e. size, polarizability, ionization energy, Zeff etc.) and the students run to get in line in the correct order.  I have a bell which I ding if correct, and a buzzer that I sound if incorrect. If incorrect, they have to try again.

The N5+ Cation: Explosive Chemistry and Raman Analysis (Christe)

Description

­This paper discusses the synthesis and characterization of a novel compound of nitrogen.  The pre-discussion assignment asks students draw a Lewis structure for the N5+ cation, and using the tools of group theory, conduct a normal mode vibrational analysis, comparing the results to the experimental Raman spectral data.­­
