We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in organometallic chemistry at Reed College under the supervision of Dr. Miriam Bowring.  This research position focuses on organometallic mechanisms, synthesis, and catalysis.

The postdoctoral researcher will develop homogeneous organometallic reactions with late transition metals for probing the causes and effects of large kinetic isotope effects. The position requires strong communication skills, since this work involves collaboration and supervision of undergraduate research projects.  Applicants with a desire to mentor undergraduates, work independently, pursue external funding, and become an active member of the Reed community are preferred.

Located in Portland, Oregon, Reed College is one of the country's leading liberal arts colleges, offering a rigorous academic program to approximately 1,400 undergraduates.  

The salary for the position is $48,210 and Reed offers an exceptional benefits package. This position is available immediately; the start date is negotiable. It is a one year position with opportunity for renewal.

 

Qualifications

Greetings from Turkey!

First of all, I want to introduce myself, my name is Yogesh Kumar and have Doctoral degree in the field of Organic Chemistry. Currently, I am working as Post-Doctoral Research Associate at UNAM-National Nanotechnology Research Center, Department of Chemistry, Bilkent University, Turkey.

I am a highly skilled, motivated, creative and team-oriented chemist with a strong background of organic synthesis. As per the job requirements, I have a Doctorate degree in chemistry with sufficient postdoctoral experience in synthetic organic, medicinal and material chemistry. I have gained an extensive and state of the art knowledge in modern synthetic methodologies. I have strong understanding of drug discovery research and development, management and metrics as well as the ability to focus on multiple deliverables and protocols simultaneously. Along with a strong organic chemistry background, I have a vast experience of the standard analytical methods: separation, characterization and purification [column chromatography, macro- and microscale synthesis, NMR (1H, 13C), 2D NMR (COSY, NOESY, HMBC & HMQC etc.), HPLC, prep-HPLC & Mass spectroscopy, UV-Visible and IR spectroscopy, Fluorescence spectroscopy, DLS (dynamic light scattering) and ZP (zeta potential), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET)] and various other techniques used in a drug discovery R&D.

I have demonstrated the ability to work independently and in a team at different levels during my career. During the course of my doctoral studies and postdoctoral career, I had the opportunity to guide and lead different teams of Master´s as well as PhD students. As PDRA at UNAM, my project involves the design and synthesis of fluorescent multi-glycosylated phorphyrins and cucurbiturils based nanocarriers with special focus on the delivery of antigens for vaccination purposes (e.g. cancer or infectious diseases vaccines). It combines synthetic organic, supramolecular and polymer chemistry for designing and synthesis of novel organic and inorganic/organic hybrid, nanostructured functional materials with potential applications in the areas of photonics, photocatalysis, bionanotechnology such as live cell imaging and theranostic nanomedicine, polymeric opto-electronic devices (LEDs, solid state lighting and photovoltaic devices), chemo- and bio-sensors, molecular switches. As a Research Associate at Sphaerapharma, the designing of new research projects, and then their successful execution and completion gave me a valuable experience of leadership and employee motivation. Here, I was working in a medicinal chemistry laboratory, analytical chemistry laboratory in a team of dedicated medicinal chemistry scientists. My major focus revolved around designing, synthesis and process development of new selective small molecule inhibitors like Ketohexokinase (KHK), Allosteric inhibitors (collaborated project with Allosteros Therapeutics Inc. USA) etc. and a structure based medicinal chemistry strategy of lead optimization to increase inhibitor potency and limit any CNS penetration while retaining their high kinase selectivity. Handled “The Wellcome Trust” funded project for the development of new drug SPR113 (EC50 of < 50nM) to treat multiple drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) tuberculosis (TB). Also, a key inventor in developing a chemical transformation based drug modification technology at Sphaerapharma, which aids drug development of lead molecules or approved APIs by increasing solubility and altering their pharmacokinetic profiles. As a Ph.D. student at PTU, I worked on a number of projects on the synthesis and synthetic transformations of various functionalized lactams using lactam synthon methodology, transition metal catalysis and cycloaddition reactions of azadienes for the formation of various biological active heterocycles.

Furthermore, I was involved in writing many comprehensive review articles, which gave me a wide knowledge of the subject and helped to keep myself abreast with the latest developments in my field of research. I also got various opportunities to present my research in the form of talks and poster presentations at international conferences and symposia.
