Grading Multiple Choice Exams

Submitted by Amanda Reig / Ursinus College on Sat, 04/25/2015 - 23:30

We are a small school with relatively small classes.  My exams (for any course/level) typically contain at most 10 multiple choice questions.  However, we are now administering the ACS exams as final exams for many of our courses.  Since I started, we have always graded these by hand using self-generated answer sheets where students write in their choice (no bubble filling).  For multiple reasons, we think we need a more efficient (and accurate) system.

Developing Rubrics

Submitted by Barbara Reisner / James Madison University on Thu, 06/23/2011 - 10:29

Several IONiC members were meeting at Smith College and the topic of rubrics came up. I'm always looking for better ways to evaluate student work. Scott Williams mentioned that he had rubric for grading posters and Adam Johnson said he had one for grading student theses. I have an oral presentation from (that I'm in the process of revising). I was hoping that people would be willing to share their rubrics so that we have good starting places from which to work.

Please consider by sharing your rubrics, your thoughts on developing them, etc.

Advice on teaching (and grading) lab report writing

Submitted by Dr. J. Metzker / Georgia College on Tue, 11/25/2008 - 12:49

I am currently in the trenches grading many general chemistry and inorganic lab reports.  I wonder what strategies you use to teach and grade reports.  I provide students with detailed guidelines and a grading rubric.  They seem to have no problem following the format but they still struggle with presenting a logical analysis of their results that lead them to a viable conclusion.
