Inorganic Chemistry Viewpoint Article: Bringing Cutting-Edge Research Into the Classroom

Submitted by Maggie Geselbracht / Reed College on Tue, 05/31/2011 - 14:06

A Viewpoint article highlighting IONiC and VIPEr has just appeared in Articles ASAP in the journal Inorganic Chemistry (DOI: 10.1021/ic2006919)!  The goal of the article is to strengthen the connections between cutting-edge research and the undergraduate classroom.  We think that IONiC and VIPEr are excellent resources to build these connections and bring the excitement of research into our undergraduate courses.

EPR Reference

Anyone know a good, fundamental resource that would lay out the basics of EPR for someone trying to use the technique for the first time? Something that starts assuming genchem/intro inorganic levels of knowledge would be ideal!

Gmelin Handbook organization?

Submitted by Joanne Stewart / Hope College on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 10:25
Our library recently inherited the many-volumed Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry. I have to admit that I am relatively unfamiliar with this resource. The library has determined that there are "a couple ways" to organize it, and I have been asked to provide some intellectual guidance (pah). I've found some resources about this (http://library.buffalo.edu/asl/guides/gmelin.html), but I'm seeking input from those of you out there who might be able to provide some more direct insight. Thank you!

something deeply wrong with chemistry

Submitted by Adam Johnson / Harvey Mudd College on Wed, 06/30/2010 - 22:27

anyone see this?

http://www.chemistry-blog.com/2010/06/22/something-deeply-wrong-with-ch…

I am going to do a group meeting on Friday with my students to discuss this blog and its associated articles.  I want to alert them to the possibile realities of grad school, and traits to look for (and avoid) in potential advisors.

Any thoughts?

summer work policy

Submitted by Adam Johnson / Harvey Mudd College on Thu, 06/24/2010 - 20:36

does anyone out there in VIPEr land have a department policy on missed work during the summer?  I am asking specifically about medical or family emergency (ie, excused absences) but it would be also good wo know whats out there regarding unexcused missed days.

Sadly, I ask because one of my student's family members is having a serious medical emergency and the student has missed a lot of work and I expect more over the next week or so.
