VIPEr nanoCHAt : NeWBiEs Spring 2022 Learning Objects

Submitted by Shirley Lin / United States Naval Academy on Wed, 02/02/2022 - 18:07

This collection accompanies the IONiC VIPEr nanoCHAt video series NeWBiEs, recorded in Spring 2022. This series is comprised of weekly conversations with two IONiC members, Wes Farrell and Shirley Lin from the US Naval Academy, as they taught a foundation-level inorganic chemistry course for the first time. The LOs discussed in the videos are included in this collection.

Inorganic Chemistry

Submitted by Jason Smee / University of Texas at Tyler on Wed, 01/19/2022 - 16:07
Description

Introductory topics in inorganic chemistry including descriptive inorganic chemistry, solid-state chemistry, and coordination chemistry with the latter area consisting of nomenclature, stereochemistry, bonding, and reaction mechanisms.

Intermediate Inorganic Chemistry Lecture

Submitted by Meghan Porter / Indiana University on Wed, 08/11/2021 - 11:05
Description

Focuses on structure, bonding, and reaction mechanisms of inorganic compounds using molecular orbital theory as a basis for metal-ligand interaction. Compounds covered include transition metal coordination compounds, organometallic compounds, and bioinorganic complexes. Other topics include redox chemistry, nuclear chemistry, and an introduction to solid-state chemistry.

Introduction to Inorganic Chemistry

Submitted by Mitch Anstey / Davidson College on Tue, 07/27/2021 - 10:37
Description

Inorganic chemistry is a branch of synthetic chemistry typified by its focus on compounds composed of elements other than carbon and hydrogen. But don’t let that fool you!

nanoCHAts: Informal conversations about teaching

A collection of all of the IONiC VIPEr NanoCHAts. These are short discussion on a teaching topic by 4-5 faculty members from different institutions. Each of these events is recorded and posted to the IONiC VIPEr YouTube Channel.

Inorganic Active Learning Lesson Plan Design

Submitted by Meghan Porter / Indiana University on Fri, 05/15/2020 - 09:05
Description

I created this activity as a way to get the class involved in creating new, fun ways to teach course concepts (selfishly- that part is for me) and for students to review concepts prior to the final exam (for them).  Students use a template to create a 15-20 min activity that can be used in groups during class to teach a concept we have learned during the semester.  We then randomly assign the activities and students work in groups to complete them and provide feedback.

The benefits are twofold:

Case Study: Animal Migration and Isotopes

Submitted by Lyndsay Munro / University of Nevada on Tue, 02/11/2020 - 15:11
Description

This is an in-class case study activity that introduces relevancy between atomic structure (specifically isotopes) and animal migration.  Students will apply their knowledge of isotopes, writing atomic symbols, and calculating average atomic mass while also connecting this information to another application (in this case animal migration).
