My Notes
Description

I found this great website linked from somewhere a few days or a week ago and already forgot where. But I am teaching organic lab this semester and convinced one of the students to do a little research. As a reward, I am going to buy her, and the whole class, gelly roller pens for keeping their notebooks.

This is a GREAT site that has so much detail on keeping a lab notebook. There is a lot of great stuff in there.

Learning Goals

After reading this website, a student will know the basics of how to keep a lab notebook, and be able to explain the reasoning behind it as well.

Implementation Notes

I am going to require all my lab and research students to read this site.

Somewhat related.  Does anyone use an electronic (online) research notebook for their undergraduate research?  We have been looking at www.labarchives.com.  I was wondering if anyone uses this electronic notebook system.  I would be interested in hearing about your experience with this system or another electronic notebook.   How do your students interact with the notebook?  Do they transfer data directly into the online notebook or keep another paper notebook and then transfer the data?

Just an additional comment about labarchives.  If you want to try out the electronic notebook, they provide a 100 MB free notebook that you can sign up for at www.labarchives.com.

I have thought about using livescribe pens for e-notebook keeping (there is a thread on here about that topic... here: https://www.ionicviper.org/forum-topic/ipad-teaching) but as I currently have no research students, I can't try it out. Ha, Kurt, you and I were active on that thread too.

Pretty sure that we got the link from Scott.  There's a lot of good stuff in there.  I've alos shared the link with my Senior Presentations Course.

Not mine, I'm afraid. Wish I could take credit. I think it was Adam Johnson.

Hi Kurt,

Not sure you'll see this, but one of my colleagues, Mike Seymour, is trying out electronic notebooks this semester (Spring 2013). He has also been looking for others doing this.
