This is a short presentation giving an overview of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), meant to be an introduction for those who are unfamiliar with the technique.

Learning Goals: 

A student should be able to:

  • become aware of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)
  • understand both "pros" and "cons" of the technique, including what kinds of problems it is useful for, what sample characteristics are needed, and what typical data look like.

These are slides for student self-study, just to familiarize themselves with the technique.  It is not meant to be a comprehensive or in-depth review.

Time Required: 
10 minutes
Evaluation Methods: 

A simple quiz/test question could be asked regarding the content to evaluate whether students understood the rudimentary details of XPS.
