Description

This LO uses borane and carborane clusters to practice assigning point groups and counting electrons. It also asks students to recall electronegativity trends to predict dipoles, and they can check their predictions against calculated Mulliken charges.

Learning Goals

 

  • Assign point groups to borane and carborane clusters
  • Count electrons in borane clusters
  • Assign partial charges using electronegativity values
  • Interpret Mulliken charges that result from computational chemistry
Implementation Notes


This activity has several questions that could stand alone. The first question has examples of point groups and isomers. The second question deals with counting electrons. The third and fourth questions review electronegativity and connect electronegativity predictions with calculated Mulliken charges.

This activity could be used in class with students working in small groups, or it could be used as part of a homework assignment.
