Description

This literature discussion LO was created for the ACS National Award Winners 2026 collection for Dr. Jonas C. Peters, the recipient of the ACS Award in Inorganic Chemistry. This LO is based on the article "Terminal Iron–Dinitrogen and Iron–Imide Complexes Supported by a Tris(phosphino)borane Ligand" published in Angewandte Chemie Int. Eng. Ed, 2011, 50(9), 2063-2067. https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.201006918

guiding questions for students 76.5 KB
Learning Goals

After reading the article and answering the guiding questions, students will be able to....

1) Explain the interest in the chemistry of nitrogenase enzymes.

2) Describe the iron complexes found in the article using the Covalent Bond Classification (CBC) method.

3) Interpret structural data from the article.

4) Interpret experimental data to the magnetic properties of Fe complexes.

Implementation Notes

This LO has not been used yet, but we recommend assigning these questions to the students before class, so that they come prepared to discuss the paper in class.

Time Required
variable, depends upon implementation. If students read the article and look at the questions before class, the discussion/group work could fit into a 45-60 minute class period.
Evaluation
Evaluation Methods

One possible method of evaluation is to collect student answers to the guiding questions before the discussion takes place in class and/or collect student answers after the class discussion and/or collect answers written by small groups during the discussion.
