Description

This 1FLO focuses on the fundamentals of catalysis and the interpretation of catalytic data. The questions guide students through the definition of catalysts, turnover frequency, turnover number, and require the students to extract information from a table of catalytic data. The data set comes from the unprecedented activity of carba-closo-dodecaborate ligated gold catalysts in hydroamination reported by Lavallo and coworkers in 2013 (Lavallo, V.; Wright II, J. H.; Tham, F. S.; Quinlivan, S. Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 3172. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.201209107).

The first eight questions cover explicit catalytic data reported in Table 1, followed by challenge questions that ask the students to extrapolate from the explicit data to address reactivity trends in the hydroamination catalysis.

Learning Goals

In answering these questions, a student will be able to:
- define and describe the various components of a catalytic reaction and draw reasonable mechanisms based on written descriptions.
- define and calculate catalytic metrics (TON, TOF, PPM)
- interpret tabulated data
- explain trends in reactivity

Implementation Notes

Students should be provided with the paper prior to the assignment. However, the paper does not have to be read prior to completing the assignment. The interpretation of data and worksheet should be done in groups and is estimated to take a full class period.

Evaluation
Evaluation Methods

Student learning will be assessed by grading their responses to the questions against the key. Points will be assigned based on accuracy of answers.
